Yeah Waks, I caught the tail end of the report on the news earlier. It seem's to be getting to close for comfort now. Because of health problems I eat chicken quite a bit, the way things are going I'll be struggling to eat at all before long, but that will probably do me more good at the moment the weight I'm carrying round.

I heard that it's a particular turkey farm in Norfolk that's affected - B Matthews. Apparently, they're going to have to slaughter thousands of birds...it's worrying

We have a chicken/turkey farm just down the road from us, about a 5 min walk......let's hope it's an isolated case & all the departments involved do everything in their power to reduce the risk of it spreading!

I just read the news when I logged on. It's really worrying because a few miles from us there is a Lloyd Maunders slaughter house where people I know work. God, I hope they take this news seriously.
My boss used to work there, but only lasted one day because she couldn't hack it, so this news will affect her, well it will affect everyone won't it?

Worth looking at the Defra website about all this. As far as I can tell its not confirmed yet whether this is the strain that can pass on to the likes of us but worth looking at the section on wild garden birds, i.e. how to handle them if you find dead ones etc. Ugh ! Nasty.............bad enough Bill having 'Man flu'...............dont need this worry as well.............oh eck...............hope it is Man flu hes got

Thought Id add this:

Quote:
There is no reason for public health concern. Avian Influenza is a disease of birds and whilst it can pass very rarely and with difficulty, to humans this requires extremely close contact with infected birds, particularly faeces. Defra, the Health Protection Agency and local NHS are continuing to work closely to ensure that all necessary precautions are being taken. Despite this incident, the current level of risk to humans from H5N1 remains extremely low.
The European Commission has been informed of this development.

1. Avian Influenza is a disease of birds and whilst it can pass very rarely and with difficulty to humans, this requires extremely close contact with infected birds, particularly faeces. As a precautionary measure those who might have been exposed would be offered the appropriate treatment and protection in line with established protocols. Advice from the Food Standards Agency remains that properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.
2. All avian influenzas (H1 to H16) can be low pathogenic but only H5 and H7 are known to become highly pathogenic.
3. The details on the measures that apply in Protection, Surveillance and Restricted Zones can be found on the Defra website at www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/latest-situation/index.htm
4. Targeted surveillance for high pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza and other avian influenza viruses in wild birds is in place throughout the UK and is ongoing. If you find dead wild gulls, waders, ducks, geese or swans and you are within a survey area or are unsure whether you are in a surveillance area you may wish to contact the Defra Helpline (08459 33 55 77) and choose the Avian Influenza option or visit the Defra website:

The following additional information is taken from DEFRA's website. I think this is the latest.

Quote:
The State Veterinary Service are enforcing a Protection Zone of three kilometres radius (centred on grid reference TM4009079918) and a Surveillance Zone of 10 kilometres (centred on grid reference TM4009079918) around the premises where movement restrictions will be imposed and poultry must be isolated from wild birds.

A wider Restricted Zone has also (in consultation with ornithologists) been imposed, covering east Suffolk and South East Norfolk bounded to the west and the north by the A140 and A47 respectively, an area of approximately 2090 sq.km. It requires the isolation of poultry from wild birds, and requires movements to be licensed. As further information becomes available and in consultation with ornithological experts the restrictions in place may be adjusted.

The national general licence on bird gatherings has been revoked, and bird shows and pigeon racing will no longer be permitted.

Advice from the Food Standards Agency remains that properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.

There was a case in Essex last year but fortunately it was in a quarantine unit at a bird farm so wasn't amongst the wild birds apart from those in the same unit.

I've heard that officials are gassing all the birds on the infected farm.
