A deep area of low pressure is currently moving across the UK, which will bring severe gales and heavy rain throughout today to many parts.

As an additional problem a period of snow may cause disruption to travellers temporarily in northern England and over Central and Northern Scotland. The snow can be seen as the areas of white on the above graphic.

This morning the winds have started increasing in strength across much of England and Wales.

SOME OF THE HIGHEST GUSTS SO FAR

0500 - The Needles (western Isle of Wight) - 85mph

0500 - Aberdaron (Lleyn Peninsula, Wales) - 80mph

0500 - Mumbles (south of Swansea) - 76mph

0500 - Aberporth (west Wales) - 72mph

0500 - Culdrose (southwest Cornwall) - 67mph

0600 - Bournemouth - 61mph

0600 - Guernsey - 60mph

0700 - The Needles (western Isle of Wight) - 99mph

0900 - Heathrow - 56mph

0900 - Great Dun Fell (Cumbria) - 79mph

0900 - Bristol - 61mph

Some areas are already experiencing problems to their electrical supply and there has also been disruption to travel. Some flights have been cancelled at Cardiff International.

There are reports that trees have fallen down in many areas due to the strong winds. The Shrewsbury to Chester railway line has been closed after a train collided with a tree on the line just outside Chirk Station. A falling tree has also killed a man in Shropshire this morning.

So why are we seeing so much stormy weather?
The position of the jet stream is crucial. This conveyor belt of very strong high-level winds steers areas of low pressure across the Atlantic and this winter the jet stream has been aimed directly at the UK. Storms that developed off the east coast of the USA have gained strength over the relatively warm waters of the mid-Atlantic before hitting our shores. The strength of the jet stream also determines the severity of the storms and this season jet speeds have been unusually high.

After the storm system has gone through, which should be later this evening and into Friday the weather will turn much colder with the risk of snow in the north and east as the low pulls away towards Scandinavia.
How bad is it where you are ? I just heard something and hope its nothing fell of my roof ! I aint going out there to see thats for sure.......might get blown totally away and no telling where I'd end up.

You mean you haven't got the gale force winds Derrick ? It's just not fair.
My bulbs are poking through.......geraniums haven't died off like they usually do, climbing rose still flowering (unless it's been blown away)........but I've now got a trellis thats sort of half fallen down and the rest of it looks a bit dodgy...............more expense..........

LOL Petal, I can just picture you flying through the air like Mary Poppins
using a wireless laptop.

Quite windy down here, had to phone the Council to report a leak in the
roof and coming through the bedroom ceiling, not long had laminated flooring down to, my son's monitor was just
2cm's away from the drips, so had to move that away and put towels and buckets down to catch the drips, Hope the ceiling doesn't fall down within 24 hours, before tha council get here.

We're not fairing much better in Yorkshire..... the winds are def getting stronger!! My fencing doesn't look very promising, I've just texted my OH to tell him (God know's what he's going to do, he's at work??). The rain's just starting again too.

My poor cats are going out of their mind, the wind keeps blowing the catflap, they think it's another cat coming into the house & come charging full speed down the hall to find nothing there!

Do we know when these gales are supposed to reach their peek?

Towards the week-end, followed by snow and ground frost, best stay indoors.

This was from the Met Office............bbc website says much the same....in other words........they don't know.

Severe gales across much of UK, may cause significant disruption.
Today:

Severe gales across the UK, apart for central and northern Scotland, with gusts of 60 to 70mph likely, perhaps even to 80mph in exposed locations. Rain, also snow on Scottish high ground, clearing then showers following.

Tonight: Showers across northwest parts of England and Wales, also across Northern Ireland and northern Scotland, some heavy. Elsewhere largely dry with clear spells, while the wind eases.

Friday: Cloud and outbreaks of rain spreading northeast across the UK, rain becoming persistent across western Scotland and Cumbria. Ahead of the rain scattered showers, mainly in the west. Breezy.

Here in north east lancashire it is horrible. Force gale winds, rain and all sorts of debris flying about. Just got back from Sainsbury's, on way home we heard about a metal roof blowing off and closing down a main road. Part of the road leading to our house is closed because of a roof blowing off, Summerfields store was closed off with police standing guard but don't know what has happened there. Like you Petal I have just heard a bang coming from above my house but am not going to investigate. My main worry at the moment is three of my grandchildren are at school and my son is at work. Just heard that part of the motorway has been closed because a lorry has blown onto a car. My best friend and her hubby are supposed to be flying to St Lucia today for her 60th birthday.

It is very scary isn't it?

All of you take care.
I am going to hibernate now. bye

Rooftiles can be replaced Mary, as long as you are ok! Me & Hubby have just been in garden taking extremely wobbly fencing down before it gets blown down & damaged, or it comes down & hits the neighbours car. Once the weather has subsided, we'll put it back up again. It's our local wheelie bin emptying day today..... there's currently a dozen or more bins doing a synchronised dance in the road!
