Default starting your own website

hi,

I'm not sure if ive asked this question here before, but I have been thinking very seriously about setting up my own website, focusing on my parents surnames and the names of my ansestors that make up my family tree. I have now found a good hosting site and i'm fairly proficient at designing websites so that wound be a problem.

But i would like any advice/comments/suggestions from the forum as to what to include to make it useable as a reference for others, how to lay it out in terms of the family names and histories etc and how to get it seen on the internet.

thank you for your time

Thumbs up Re: starting your own website

Hi Helen,

There are quite alot of different answers to your questions.

Personally I would use a mix of PHP and XHTML to construct the sort of site you are after. This will enable you to incoorperate such things as search facilities quickly and easily.
As for getting your webpages seen that will come down to how well your pages are coded for SEO (search engine optimization). This means the proper use of keywords, page titles, meta tags and content etc.

For laying out your site I would be happy to help you. It would require you providing me with alot more information of the sort of site you are after and details of its content but I am sure it wont be any sort of problem.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask them and I will be happy to help and guide you. I dont know a thing about genealogy but this subject is more my bag.

Kindest regards

Jon

Hi Helen,

Take a look at http://webhosting.yahoo.com/ps/sb/index.php - you can download the software to create your site for free and the cost of publishing the site is very reasonable.
