Wow what wonderful messages !!Just want to let you know I have not left the site just taking a well earned rest, I have popped on a few times but had no-one to chat to. I have simply gone back to my roots, after all isn't that what this site is all about, I have negleted my own research and simply went back to it. I promised two aunts that I would send all my stuff to them (they are both in their eighties) so I am desparate to get it done. After returning to it, mainly to tidy up the loose ends and to ensure everything had been confirmed through certification, before setting into an album form for them by scanning and copying everything as they both are afraid to dabble with computers. In doing this work and as I progressed through, I found missing pieces, which in turn opened new lines and this kept going and is still continuing, so much so, I have added a further 227 names to my tree and am fast approaching 1000 names, 138 to go. I honestly believe someone 'up there' is helping me because I can't stop. Every certificate that is authentic to my tree, leads to another branch. Here is a very good tip for those of you doing Scottish research, when you get a copy of a marriage certificate look and register or make a note of the witnesses to the marriage. It has been my good fortune to find several new marriages from one or both of the persons that acted as witnesses which very often are brothers or sisters of those getting married and are usually chosen because they are a couple themselves with thoughts of marriage. This is not always the case but it is worth bearing in mind and has certainly worked for me.! Well that's me done for another few days, I do hope to find one or two in chat when I visit. See you all soon ![]() |

Oh Geoff what a speech..........lol.
What you say about Scottish research holds very true cos on those certs that I have found the witnesses are mostly family, Apart of course from my Irish Gran....Then again one of her witnesses may have been a married sister when she married my Grandad..haven't gone there yet. In Scotland usually brothers or sisters were witnesses as you say Geoff and even today that is still held firm., apart from my case as I have no sisters so it was my best pal...............Love Scots certs.........so informative. Birth certs are the best as they give parents date of marriage......how good is that. (can tell if it was shotgun......pmsl............. surprsingly common.....lol) Good luck in your research mate and was great talking to you last night................I think......pmsl. See you on the boards and in chat mate |
