When going through census pages & BMD's etc. Do you ever take note of some of the names you see ? I often say to myself, "Boy, am I glad I never got landed with a name like that"! Then I think does that name still exist, or was it bred out ?
The name Hogsflesh I came upon in the 1841 census some years ago in Portsmouth. Then last week I found it again in Sussex. I have never come across that name in real life. A lad I was with in the RAF changed his name from Heap to Wright. Because he took a lot of shyacking from his mates. Another thing is the number of ways a name is spelled. I saw Elliot spelt 7 different ways in the IGI. Including Ellyott, Allyott. My own maternal ancestors, name of Soraghan appears to be written so many different ways that, I often became confused when tracing them. An ancient Irish spelling was O'Sorroghan. It is no wonder that this is a frustrating & long winded hobby. We should have started when we where young. I'm glad I started in the 1990s before everyone began charging for a "Captaian Cook" at the files & registers. All the best ......Jimbo |

You know Jimbo, you are a pain in the rear end, but I agree wholeheartedly with what you just wrote.
When I was researchng my Dad's side of the family I came across the name Hughes many times. The different spellings of it were unbelieveable. There was Huws, Huwys, Hues and Hughs among them, before some kind soul of a rellie took pity and told me it was Hughes. It is a real headache sometimes, but innit a great feeling when you find what you're looking for? But anyway, such is life, mate. Sally |

Hi Jimbo
![]() You are so right , on doing census the different variety of how a surname is spelt , it can alter from one page to another 1841 i think are the worse . Thats why always best to try different ways of spelling when researching . It does take time but still enjoyable hunting for them ![]() |

Not so much a change in name like those before, but I did have a great aunt named Florence Maybrick S____ her year of birth 1888, the year of the James Maybrick murder trial what I wonder, was my GGrandmother thinking of.
