Default Weekend Weather Forecast

It's Raining Again
(Updated Friday 13/07 08:54)
The rain has arrived, already some heavy bursts are occuring over parts of Wales, and during the rest of the morning the West Midlands, parts of Northwest England and Southwest England will start to see more in the way of heavy rain. As the day moves on Northern England, Northern Ireland and then Scotland will be affected. The Southeast of England and East Anglia should stay mainly dry throughout.

Overnight tonight (Friday) the rain will clear much of England to leave just a few showers for the Northwest, which are likely to affect this area through Saturday. The main rain band will be over Scotland by that time, not clearing the far north until the evening, with fairly scattered showers developing to the south. Ireland are also likely to get some sharp showers and perhaps some storms developing during Saturday afternoon. Elsewhere on Saturday it should be mainly dry, with some bright spells.

Into Sunday and still some uncertainty over this one, at the current time it seems an area of heavy, thundery rain will move up across Western and Central parts during the early hours, slowly moving north during the day - with some impressive rainfall totals possible. Further East, some storms and showers may also be set off later in the day, with a further risk of storms moving into Southern areas overnight. This could mean a more widespread risk of storms for Monday as well - but this is a long way off in weather terms at the current time.

Does this help Chris ?

Quote:
Summer proper arriving soon...
After a warm and dry start, we have seen a spectacularly wet end to the first Summer month.

Atlantic systems have brought wind and rain to many parts, and we have seen conditions typical of the ‘European monsoon’ that has actually been quite commonplace in June over the last 20 years or so, although the rainfall totals have been exceptional.

So is the rest of the Summer going to be a washout ? We don’t think so, but rainfall totals are likely to tend to average to slightly above rather than the below average totals that were anticipated.

July will begin unsettled with Low pressure close to the British Isles bringing further wind and rain. The most likely break to this pattern will come as High pressure builds to our East and Atlantic systems begin to stall out to our West. We would expect mid July onwards to be increasingly warm with the potential for thundery downpours, particularly in Southern Britain.

The La Nina event, alluded to in the original forecast, looks less likely to materialise, and August is expected to see the Azores High trying to influence our weather, although with the jet possibly still quite active, higher rainfall totals are likely in the North and West.

Overall, high confidence that July and August will see temperatures typically 1.5C above the long term average and 70% confidence that rainfall will be above average in July, with similar probability of above average rainfall in Scotland and Northern Ireland in August.
