    Default Anything about SOROGHAN

Any information on the name of SOROGHAN. What I have is as follows.

Patrick SOROGHAN married Mary PADYAN (PADIAN). Circa 1830.

James SOROGHAN. dob circa 1835, Cavan.

Owen (Eugene) SOROGHAN. dob circa 1840, Cavan.

Owen married Elizabeth REILLY, circa 1862, Cavan. (Drumlane parish)

Daur, Elizabeth, dob 1862, Stradone, Cavan.

Son, James, dob 1864, Ballyjamesduff, Cavan.

The Soroghan's arrived in Scotland in 1865. Where more children were born in Edinburgh

old town, Cannongate. Now their name has changed to SORDEN. They are all burried in New Carlton Hill Cemetery.

It seems that Owen's brother James arrived in Edinburgh first. His name has been recorded as GORDEN & SORDEN.

The name Soroghan,Soraghan, Sorraghan,Soran stem from the old Irish root of O'Sorachain (Sorcha, Meaning Bright).

Any information regarding SOROGHAN in eary 19th century Cavan is most welcome.

G'day Scotty. Many thanks for your input. No doubt there is a relationship, possibly cousins. The name of SORAGHAN & it's variants is not widely spread in Ireland.

You will note that birth of James in Ballyjamesduff occured in 1870. My part of the family were in Scotland then.

My James was born same place in 1864. His parents were Owen & Elizabeth SORAGHAN (nee. O'Reilly). You contribution will enable me to explore further this line of the family.

Many thanks again, & my regards. .... Jimbo

BH, Thank you for your input. I guess there would still be some of them around. I have noted that there are some here in Australia, as well as in the USA.

One problem seems to be that, some of them changed their name. Some, like my lot had their name changed on emmigrating to another country. I supose the confusion would have been in the translalation . I also wonder about the phonetics of the name. Would it have been like Soraan, Sorahan. Where the gh is not sounded ? How my ancestors where changed to Sorden, I have no idea.

    Nil Desperandum. Jimbo.

    Hi Scotty.

I have no evidence of any of my Soraghan's being involved with the RIC. But, then we can never be sure, can we ?

As I have said previously. Owen & Elizabeth Soraghan migrated to Scotland in 1865. So anything on them & children Elizabeth & James. Would have taken place in Edinburgh, under their new name of SORDEN.

In Irish, the name Owen would be Eugene. I found this on 'Irish Genealogy.

Surname. First name. Surname. first name. Year. Source. Centre.

(husband) (husband) (Wife) (Wife) (Leitrim genealogy Centre)

SORAGHAN EUGENE REILLY ELIZABETH 1858 Marriages

I will have to contact Leitrim Library for a copy of a certificate. While the Australian Dollar is on a high.

    all the best ......... Jimbo.
