How do I go about finding the birth of my gtx2 grandmother Olivia Porter who was born in Nova Scotia in 1833? Her father was called John and he was a mariner.

You need to narrow down the query somewhat. Do you know what county Olivia was born in or married in or died in? John being a mariner in 1833 Nova Scotia is very specific either as many people were fishermen / mariners. There is the Nova Scotia Vital Stats site you could search, however, not all records are there yet. you can also check out the Collections Canada site, the Nova Scotia GenWeb and Cyndi's List for Nova Scotia.
