    Default Paylet

I hope I am on the right board, if not please shove it to where it belongs. I am looking for information on the above name. It appears in the 1891 census of llanelly Breconshire.

Lewis Paylet 46 Traveller born Russia
    Abram 18 Born Russia
    David 16 Born Russia.
They were staying at 40 Glammorgan Street and it seems as if they were boarders there as there does not seem to be a connection between them and the other residents. I am trying to find out when and where they entered the country.

    Many thanks

Well he can be found , it seems, only on the 1891 census in Wales, 3 silly dogs, so it's as good a place as any to put him. But he died in Leeds though probate was in Wales.
I've looked all the places I know and think he may have been an Ashkenazy jew fleeing from Lithuania.

I looked again and A***** has immigrant arrivals and I've been through them all and can't find one that really fits him. He may well have come in via Paris or Belgium. Many Russians got into France and then to England. But yours may have come in via Rotterdam or even from America, arriving here sometime between 1881 and 1891.

Is the surname spelt Pallatt or Paylet on either of his sons' marriage certificates?

There were Jews from Russia who lived in the Chetham area of Manchester and there is a family headed by a Peter Platt born Russia and all the family (some with Jewish names are there). Do you want it posted?
Abraham is in Cardiff on 1901 with wife and two childern but no definite place of birth -born Russia Brit. subject. So there will be nationalisation papers for him somewhere which should give town of birth.
    As for David-
Is he the David Pallett who died 5th June 1957 and is in the Chevra Kadisha cemetery in Jo'burg. Do not the Jewish helping Hand society have no further details. OR perhaps try JOWBR.

If you do find he was from Lithuania there is a book available called-The Jews of Lithuania: A History of a remarkable Community 1316-1945-by Masha Greenbaum which sounds interesting.

There is also a Jewish Community of Lithuania in Vilnius. There is an e mail address I can give you should you wish.. It might perhaps be worth contacting them to see if they have records or know where these are kept.

ctd. If you don't have the marriage of Abraham Pallatt and Esther(nee Morris) here it is- Prestwich manchester. Lancs. July Aug/Sept 1897. 8d,696.
And there is an Esther Morris born Lancs, age 6 on on 1881 census with father H. Morris, a tailor born Russia/ Poland. If you haven't it I can post it here.

So maybe your Abraham's father was Polish too ?

    Hi Lola5
I would appreciate it if you could post it for me. I am really happy that I found this forum, it gives me new enthusiasm for the research, I was somewhat in the doldrums.
I am not sure if he was Polish, as I said, family "legend" has it that they were Lithuanian, but anything is possible at this stage.

He is the David Pallett who died in Johannesburg, I have his grave number and that of his wife Minnie nee Paiken in the Westpart Cemetary in Jhb, unfortunately our research facilities are not as jacked up as yours and it can be difficult to find out anything unless someone is prepared to go to the cemetary for you. I also know that Lionel is buried in Pietersburg in the Jewish cemetary there, he was mentioned together with what appears to be a second wife, in the Beith Hautusfoth project, that info is on Rootsweb, but I can find no further info on him, other than and estate notice on our National Archive. Research can be very frustrating in South Africa, especially with no census information available.

I did find notice of his nationalisation but it was dated 1906 in one of the newspapers, so I am sure there is documentation for it.

I would appreciate the e-mail for the Vilnius.

    Tks

    Hi 3sillydogs,
We are happy you found the this forum too. The more the merrier and the better chance that someone might have information you need.
I will pm you the e mail address. It just might be worth a try. At least they might be able to tell you whether the name is of Polish or Lithuanian origin.
And will post census details of Abraham and wife and of Esther's family.
Hopefully we may find the naturalisation details of Abraham and a birthplace for him.
You mentioned Lionel? Was he David's and Minnie's son?

    Hi Lola5,

Lionel was my grandfather, he was Abraham and Esther's son. I found the reference I was talking about in the London Gazette dated June 1 1906 with notice of Abraham's date of taking the oath of allegiance. Gives his birth place as Russia. Have also found reference to Pallatt on Jewishgen Family Finder listing a number of places in Russia, but unfortunately it is a relative and family politics comes into play so cannot contact him!!!!!! It lists Minsk, Riga, Warsaw, Vilnius,Moscow, Prestwich and Cardiff. So they evidently came from that end of the world. Very frustrating, but if they did it so can I hopefully with the help of this forum.

    IHello 3 sillydogs,

Hope you won't mind me adding my two cents worth. Have you got the Death Notice from the file at the SA Archives? Have you had a look at A.......24?

    hi Val

there is only the estate notice on NAAIRS listing his surviving spouse, and they do not send copies, I have been told that to get a copy will have to approach an researcher as it is in the "Transvaal". I have checked A.......24, but they have limited scope unless subscribed, have seriously considered doing it again. I did subscribe a few years ago and did not find much, but perhaps their "new look" one willhave more. Will check it out.

    Thanks,

David's name was spelt Pallett, and I have their (his and Minnie's) grave nos in the Westpark Cemetary, Lionel is buried in Pietersburg, but could not find much else, except that NAAIRS lists a surviving spouse who was not my grandmother, so it appears that he married again. I would also like to find out if David married before he came to SA as he was of "advanced" age when he married Minnie. He was my gr.uncle.
