There are so many to search through, I suspect it may be a lengthy procedure! I have looked through myself because I have enjoyed trawling through the records like the good old days before t'internet when we expect to press a few buttons and find the answer and if it isn't on the first couple of pages we give up (well I do!). With written records, I am happy to go through page by page.

Started on Monkwearmouth but the only one I came across was a Luke Short b 1799 marrying an Ann Pearson (page157). Made a note just in case! Oh and I came across a Thomas Smith marrying an Ann Gale in 1806. I was quite excited by the name connection until I check back on your thread and realised it would be the wrong date and Ann GAGE not GALE (page177 in case you want it for your ever growing collection!).

I did look for Wm Short born c1838 in Coldstream (on Cornhill transcripts). I guess you noticed that the records jump from 1837 Baptisms to 1840 Baptisms!! Hmm - typical of this family it seems!!

I scoured Cornhill myself, but the only record I found was the one you'd got for John. I think that's likely to be the right one, though I am a bit worried about the writing, it could easily say "Shard" or "Shart" instead of "Short", but given the context I'm pretty sure it's him.

I've gone through Sunderland and Monkwearmouth myself. Found quite a few other people in my tree (relatives of Ann Gage), but not the Shorts. I've also had a crack at a couple of other collections I discovered for Northumberland. There are marriage bonds and calendars for Durham diocese on the familysearch site too, but so far they've not turned up anything useful.

I'm hoping to visit Coldstream some time in the next couple of months, and I'm going to have a bit of a tour around the area while I'm up there. Specific points of interest being the graves of Mary Short (William's possible mum), Mary Short (her mum) and William himself, in Sunderland. A cousin sent me a photo of the grave of Ann Gage a while back, so I know what's on that, but I'm hoping there are some nuggets of interest to find on the graves above. I'm also going to visit the end of Duns Road where I think Loan House was (and probably still is, as 3 Duns Road). Not sure what the current residents will make of me lurking around out the front.

It'll be great for you to visit Coldstream and the surrounding villages! Hope you can find the gravestones okay! Perhaps you will be able to find out which graveyard she is buried in and if you are lucky, the local vicar will have records you can look at too!

I wonder if someone, somewhere, has recorded the details of the graveyards you are interested in? I have heard of this happening.

I have been spending some time (having re-found the Bisho's Transripts) looking for a marriage of my GGG Grandma in Sunderland!

I would like to get up to Stirling to look for a couple of relatives graves - maybe next year!

Just a quick update to say I recently found a distant cousin on A*. She's a direct descendant of Leonard Short, my William's uncle. Together, we've uncovered a few new facts about the Shorts in Coldstream and the surrounding area. Firstly, Leonard's father wasn't Thomas Short, but William Short, as evidenced by his second marriage certificate (and several death certificates, Mary's and Margaret's I think). We think Thomas is actually Leonard's grandfather. He outlived his son by quite a margin, as from what we can tell, William died in 1832, and the grandchildren who were born in Australia could easily have confused him with their real grandfather when filling out death registrations for their parents.

Thought those of you who were so helpful on this post might be interested.
