I have been a member here for a little while and if I see someone in the Chat Room I go in and have a chat with members from the other side of the world. Big Don is one of the members that I have met in there and I am usually lucky to strike him in when I login.
This morning we were having a chat and he mentioned that he had just found a relative that had been sent to Australia. I asked him what the name was and he said Thorley. I thought thats funny I'm sure I have Thorley's in my tree also. Had a quick look at my Thorley's and the earliest record I had was Philip Thomas born at Sydney Cove in 1799, no information further back than that.
I have several links to the Thorley family but the main one is through my GG Grandfather's sister who married a Robards. One of their daughters married Philip Thomas' son also called Philip Thomas. Had a quick look in RootsWeb in the Family Trees and found one listing that had Philip Thomas' father's name and lo and behold it was the same one that Big Don was looking for. Turns out Philip's father Samuel is Big Don's 5 x Great Grandfather.
I am now even more convinced that there is no such thing as coincidence. To think that in this vast world you can be chatting to someone on the other side of the world on the internet and unbeknownst to you you are chatting to one of your distant rellies.
Never stop searching as you never know when one of your brickwalls will crumble. You never know if the person you are chatting to may turn out to be a cousin.![]()
