    Default Ftm 2012

I had Family Tree Maker 2012 bought for me as a Christmas present and with it came 6 months free Ancestry searches .....or so I thought...!!

I loaded the program and updated it from my 2005 version but when I try to search on Ancestry I keep getting a pop-up asking me to pay for one of their subscriptions. I entered my credit card details for payment in 6 months time so I have followed the rules so why can't I get to search on Ancestry with my free 6 months version.?

Any ideas....... Thanks for your advice.

OH!! By the way................ HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

Sorry Friends but I jumped the gun a little!! I now find that I can search on Ancestry. Probably got too carried away and tried before I was approved.

    That's good Evacuee,
Hope it works for you .
Don't forget to cancel in good time if you don't want to continue paying the sub after the 6 months are up.
So nice to see you again. We have missed you on Aa.

Hi Lola............. Sorry for late reply.

Well now I'm signed up for a free subscription I might be getting back on here with a few questions.

My first question would be......... If I send my brother a copy of my tree would he be able to open it without havig a copy of FMT on his

computer or should I send him my old 2005 copy of FMT?

My second question is.......... I have both my fathers tree and my mothers tree on my fathers tree. I would like to seperate them into two

trees. I have rebuilt my maternal tree under my mothers maiden name now how do I delete all my mothers ancesters in my paternal tree?

Hope you understand my question and thanks in advance for your advice.

First I would have thought you would be able to send your brother a copy and I would have thought he should be able to open it.
secondly is there not at the top of the ftm screen left hand side the option to edit, file view etc, under people you should be able to delete.

Just to say Evacuee that I am glad pejay has replied as I can't help with the FMT stuff. Is there a booklet that comes with or somewhere where can get help. And yes I would send your brother your old FMT if he hasn't one.

I have my tree on T**B*l P***s and it seems to let me put on and delete as I please and it will make you a cd of your tree(though I suppose one could make ones own) and I have done this but it has shown up all the gaps....?

It seems a pity to delete a whole other side of a tree. There must be a way to separate the maternal and paternal trees without having to delete and re do all one side. Don't do anything hastily. Check all options first. Why not send it as it is and let your bro. decide if he wants to scrap half?

Yes I understand the question(I think) but can't see why you want two separate tree when they have become linked by the bed springs.

I am not sure how you can send a copy of your tree from FTM, unless its as a PDF. - FTM allows you to create a one page PDF which can be exported. This facility is under the Chart making area. You can also send him the various reports - such as Ahnentafel.

However if you are using FTM, and have a subscription to Ancestry, you can up load a Gedcom file and creat an on line tree which you can share; and your brother could contribute, on line to this.

If you use the Syncronise facility of FTM 2012, which update the tree on your pc to the on line tree, I would strongly suggest that you keep a back up of your original tree, as FTM / Ancestry changes the source references to Ancestry records. This may not be how you have referenced things in the past. And if you do not wish to maintain a subscription you would probably like to maintain your personal sourcing method I would not opt for Sycronisation.

As for spliting the tree, in FTM2012, there is an option under Persons, to delete an individual. BUT please make sure you have a back up of your tree, as it would be awful to lose years of work.
