Morning folks,
Looks like I stirred something here, so when I get in from work this evening I'll begin expanding on the idea. I also have a forum on illness and old treatments on my site, but it presents a greater security threat which needs bearing in mind. Any mention words like medication, and the spammers dealing with little blue pills etc start trying to get in!! It could result in much more work for the moderators. Ok, have a good day and I'll repond more fully this evening. Regards Martin |

Looking forward to it Martin.
With reference to the spammers, as you are aware it is an on going problem on ALL sites. AA currently has automatic steps that deal with this, if they get passed this stage then the moderators step in, finally I am the last wall. AA 4 will continue this trend but I have plans for increased security. Some are "out of the box" from vBulletin others are of my own design. Either way, security on AA4 will be dealt with. Regards |

Hi folks,
I guess this is going to be the first of a series of posts, because there are a number of ideas involved. But everyone has to start somewhere, so I'll expand a little on the diet thing first.. My original idea (which is of course capable of being improved and developed) was to research and document the dietary habits of our ancestors through the years and the variations according to class, location etc) Many of us have copies of 'grandmas' hand written cookery book, containing favourite recipes, or solutions to rationing during war time etc. I hoped (and still do) to produce a database of these recipes in order that they are never lost, are shared with others, and of course so that those of us who are interested, can recreate meals from past times. A searchable database of this type might be of interest to AA members, who would, I hope, be happy to add recipes to the database if it were to form a part of the updated AA 4. Anyone have thoughts on this? Bon Appetite Martin |

Hi Martin ,
I personally found members not so interested in that side. We had something similar on first site when we started. But we will see . We always listen to what members say , looking forward to hearing what other things you have in mind . |

Hi folks,
Chris, you may be right. But at the same time knowing more about te diet of our ancestors helps us to understand how they lived. Not strictly genealogy, but certainly social and family history. Like you, I'll be interested to see if members find the idea worth considering. Another interest of mine is to look at occupations. We all have Ag Labs, but what did that involve, and how has it changed over the years? Were there geographic variations? How did the industrial revolution change the lives of our ancestors? What were the new occupations? How did living conditions change? What was the effect of war on various trades and professions? And what of the more recent revolutions in working practices and conditions? The occupations of my sons, did not exist at the time I began my working life. Surely this changes the whole course of a families' history? I wonder whether there is room for a 'resource' on AA covering these fundamental concerns? More to follow.. Comments welcomed. Martin |

To achieve this by method of adding another forum/board is a no. I am trying to reduce the amount of boards on AA to ease on the navigational issues that some members have. However, thats not to say that the idea has to be squashed, my initial thoughts are that of an area on the site where members can submit this information into a catagorized database which can then be viewed by other members in "blog/wiki" form. This would HAVE to be created by myself though. The "out of the box" sofware available for this type of thing is bloated and too common. The idea lives on and is definately under consideration. We also need to consider the fact that are members going to be willing to submit the data? |
