Thread: Vital Records

    Default Vital Records

If Ancestry Aid was to take the time to re-create a Vital Records Database would you be willing to submit records into it?

That is the question we are asking you all. The system would include the following features:

    1. Birth Records
    2. Marriage Records
    3. Death/Burial Records
    4. Submit Your Own Records
    5. Search & Results

We have had this system before but it was not used as much as we would have liked. Building the system will take a little time but could be up and running within a couple of weeks.

PLEASE vote above and feel free to leave your views on this subject to this post.

    Thank you for your time.

But the vital records are already available on ancestry.co.uk and freebmd pre 1910. The only records that you could supply that are still not available are the post 1910 records. The problem is that there are so many of them, but it would be so usefull to be able to index them. But it would be a huge task.

    Hi Andy,

I understand what you are saying, yes the records are on Ancestry but the difference is there that there is a charge to view those records, if they were on here people would have them for free.

The main reason for them being on here is for members to submit their own BMDs, where there would not be any copyright issues.

As for post 1910 i wouldnt know where we stood with that, that would have to be looked into further.

    Thanks for your input

I'd like a bit more information about what is envisaged. I assume we are not looking to duplicate what is freely available elsewhere? or is ongoing on a large scale? (eg freeBMD)

The sort of things I might be able to contribute are:

Full details from any BMD certificates I have

Parish register entries I might transcribe while searching for a particular entry

    Scotlandspeople search results.

Maybe some finds when I get my one-name study properly underway.

Is this the sort of thing you have in mind?

    Could monumental inscriptions be incorporated?

What I really want is some guidance about copyright issues - I'm not at all clear

I would be interested in using the vital records because on some sites like Ancestry and Genes Reunited you have to pay to look at them and sometimes you can not afort to pay for them. So yes I would definely be using it on this site.

Family History can be an expensive pastime, especially if you have both Welsh and Irish family and Military Ancestors, and,I am all for making it cheaper.

Yes Please to the Vital Records.

Yes Ancestry have these records as so do some other sites BUT....... they are pay sites. Remember this is a free site and I believe records kept by goverments should be free. I live in australia and it is hard enough finding info on family overseas.

    Hi Gillian,

We can input what ever we like to it. As for the copyright issues this is what's what.

If the record is still in its ORIGIONAL format and you transcribe it into tex/digital format it then become YOUR Interlectual Copyright and can be added to the database on Ancestry Aid.

If the record has been previously transcribed then you can NOT use it in our database.

Does that make sense to you.

Can't wait for this to start happening.

    Thank you Jon

So if I have a birth certificate or pay to download one from Scotlandspeople I can copy it onto the database.

If I transcribe some parish records in a library that is OK too. (but not if they have already been transcribed elsewhere?)

It is not OK to copy from books/CDs/other transcription records.

I am very much in favour but would want it to be something AncestryAid is doing which is not happening on a larger scale elsewhere. FreeBMD is now pretty complete up to 1927ish and progressing further.
