Thread: Town list

Is it possible to organise a list of town names ...

Now what I mean is, you find out that "great aunty jean" was born in Chesterton, now I don't live in the UK and I have no idea where this town could be, so I have to do a search to try and find out where Chesterton is ... now I do realise that there will be towns with the same name in different shires ... but to be able to lookup in a list of some sort that this particular town is in these shires/counties ... I hope this is making sense

Yes this is completely possible. I will look into it more.



If anyone else has an idea for this please say. Would everyone else want this and would you like a system where upon you can submit the towns and other details for the towns your selves?

Would it be possible to include some sort of illustration or printed list of distances from nearby towns in each case ?

Maybe that's just too much to ask.

I've always found it useful, though, to find out how far people would have travelled to get married, or find work, or whatever.

What I could do is link to Google maps or something to give an image map of where the town is.



This system could be broken down further. It could be set up in the following format:

• County
  
• Town
  
• Historic Events Of The Town
  
• Link To Map - (This will be automatic using the Town Name)
  
  

All this information would have to be member submitted as I doubt that any one person knows all the towns in the Uk!



If you can think of any more details to add let me know, that applies to everyone.

Working from Canada, I had much the same problem until I got the know the the 'traditional homelands' of my ancestors. I'm fortunate in that - with the exception of one gg-gm - my father's ancestors were all from distinct areas within Devon and Cornwall (similarly, my mother's lineage all came from the Beara peninsula in southwest Co. Cork).



Still, there are times when I need to locate a particular town I've never heard of (or remember only vaguely), e.g., when a new relative is discovered, or when reading historical newspapers or other documents.



The best strategy I've found is to Google the terms 'genuki' and the name of the town/parish/village. Unlike a general gazetteer or online mapping site, GENUKI immediately points you to data that's relevant for genealogy/family history. GENUKI's coverage is much better for some counties than others, but where it's good, it's great. For example (if you've never tried it before) start at the Devon Index Page and see what's available for the county as a whole. Then follow the link for Devon Towns & Parishes to see what's available at the local level.

In fact for every parish in Devon, GENUKI provides a detailed map of the parish boundaries shown over a 19th century OS map, along with a link for a modern Multimap. There's also a link at the top of each parish page called Nearby Places which provides a list of all placenames within a 5 mile radius, organized by parish and distance (you can vary the search radius, but the list grows very quickly as the size increases).



It's a shame that all counties in GENUKI don't have this level of detail, but I still find it's the best starting point whenever I want to find out about a new place.
