Thread: Maria Pointon Butterworth born 1873 USA.

Hello,

I am trying to find the place and any details for her in USA.

She was christened in 1874 in St John the Baptist church in Godley cum Newton. The vicar had made a note of her birth date but not where she was born. But she says on census that it was America.

Her father was Charles Henry Butterworth born 1847 in Mottram Cheshire. He was a Moulder. Her mother was Maria Pointon born 1849 Newton, Cheshire. They also had a daughter Alice Ann Butterworth born 1870 in Hyde, who must have gone with them.

They had come back to Cheshire by 1875 when a son was born there.

If anyone has access to Passenger Lists or some other info for my query, I would very much appreciate it if you could have a look for them for me.

Hello.

No I do not know the exact birthdate of her brother. The Poynton family in 1871 is her widowed mother and children.

Looking at birthdates for her siblings, they must have been in USA between 1873 and 1875. so that is the timescale of the USA trip I believe.
She eventually emigrated and lived in NZ where husband died in 1916. she came home about 1920 and died in 1958 in Burnely.

I found Alice A Butterworth, age 21, in the 1891 census living with her mother Maria Butterworth | Registration District of Burnley. Her birthplace is Hyde, Cheshire, England |Civil Parish Burnley | Ecclesiastical parish of St. Andrew | Lancashire, England.

Living together is

Also living there is a Charlie Furton / 5 / orphan / Lancashire Bury.

Looking at the image of the census, Maria has been mis-transcribed as Maria T – it should read Maria P

The UK Incoming Passenger Lists start in 1878.

There is a family tree online at A****y, with a birth date but not location in the US. Do you have her death certificate? When I got the certificate for my GGM [she lived and died in Lancashire], it gave her place of birth. Perhaps the informant on her death certificate may have been able to supply that information.

I have all that info that you mentioned, that is everything except birth place in USA.

I do not have death cert yet but not sure whether it will give birth place if it is an English cert for death.

Thank you for that. I didn't ralise that the place of birth was included. Can't remember whether I was asked that question when I have had to register deaths of my close family members, but of course, they were all born in this country!
