Default "The Alert" of Peterhead

Hi everyone,

My name is Anne and i have started researching my fathers side of the family. It is very addictive, but i have come up against a brick wall. The family name is Pickard from Longside, Aberdeenshire Scotland. There is one person in particular that i am desperate to get more info on and that is my Gt Gt Uncle Alexander Low Pickard.

He was only 17 when he died in 1861. He was on board a whaling boat which left the port of Peterhead for the Hudson Bay. The boat was called "The Alert". The crew were very badly treated by the Master of the boat and half the crew died before reaching home. I have no idea where he was buried. If anyone out there can shed some light on this tragedy, i would be very grateful
